The Fourth Week of December

I had a simple and happy Christmas spent with my family. We don’t do fancy. It’s just a lovely jumble of traditions that we all hold dear. I appreciate the time and effort my goslings put into being together with Granny Goose. And after the indulgence of Christmas came the frosty, and sometimes snowy and bright days – full of good intentions and plans for the new year just waiting in the wings. This view really captures that feeling perfectly, don’t you think? Thinking, strolling! I quite like Twixtmas, a calmness and time to get totally organised for January and the New Year, gathering thoughts on places to visit and holidays for 2018, and quiet times to remember loved ones no longer here. This week I have also enjoyed… Watching… Little Women on BBC1. This was a lovely three-parter – just what I needed! A poignant and funny version of Louisa May Alcott’s 1869 novel which made the four March sisters seem like exciting new creations and old friends….and the single best thing on TV this Christmas. The Third Week of December

Some festive things I’m loving this week This was the last week of work before Christmas. How did that happen? It’s been so busy. I’ve enjoyed a pre-Christmas lunch with my work colleagues who I don’t see often as we all work remotely, relaxed after a spa session with my daughter as I won’t see her on her birthday, and generally put my festive hat on. Here’s what else I’ve been loving this week… The Radio Times.  I have to mention it. It’s a reminder of my Christmas past! When the paperboy popped a crisp Christmas edition of the Radio Times through the letterbox, you could smell Christmas. Two full weeks of entertainment loomed. You carefully flicked through the pages to see what was on and maybe mark out in blue Biro the programmes to be consumed! My first piece of stollen of the year. It always tastes the sweetest. Not sure how I held out so long. I’m a stickler for tradition, I suppose. No mince pies but I’m a stickler for stollen’s icing sugar …

Christmas Gifts

It’s less than two weeks to the big day. How are all your Christmas plans going? If you’re in need of ideas I’d like to lend a hand with selecting a few pressies that are sure to create a buzz on December 25th. In Harrogate recently I came across a couple of foodie ideas. The Cheeseboard, on Commercial Street (which is an arcade of independent shops from butchers to chocolate, to cakes and crafts, well worth a visit just off the main shopping area), has an amazing selection of local cheeses. Wensleydale being my favourite to go with the brandy fed Christmas cake. As they say in Yorkshire, ‘A rich fruit cake without Wensleydale cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze’. They also they do hampers by post, but hurry!! Just across the road is a chocolatier, the Harrogate Chocolate Tree, selling the most delicious ‘handmade on the premises’ chocolates. You can buy their boxes, bars or these special domes as Christmas pressies…too too tempting. They have invited me to go back in the …
