November in North Yorkshire

I’ve just come back from a bit of a retreat. I get this urge now and again to go to the seaside and I jump at the chance of a visit to see the sea, more so now that I live 70 miles inland. I was thrilled to join a dear friend 70th birthday celebrations at The Star Inn, Harome, which is just outside Helmsley. And then I was even more excited to combine a hop over the North Yorkshire Moors to Sandsend to curb my craving for the sight of the North sea. See what you think…….I love this bit of North Yorkshire, even in dull and damp November. And I even managed a misty and sunny peep over The Vale of York from Sutton Bank on the very edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. A treat like this is just what you need before the run up to Christmas.

Indian Summer – Coast and City

Goodbye September, and what an Indian summer it has been, and I have been lucky to escape for several weekends to coast and city, and I also had that delightful little trip to Ireland earlier in the month. I think I have my travel wings back at long last!! The Coast With a wonderfully wide and uninhabited beach, smuggly quiet and secluded, Sandsend, just up the coast from Whitby, is my top place to visit on the North Yorkshire coast and was lucky to find this small but perfectly formed hotel. The Woodlands Hotel   It was tucked into a valley, along a narrow lane just off the main road. The Woodlands has just four spacious bedrooms, and a self- catering cottage, plus a super restaurant and bar, the décor being calming and Gustavian. The food is locally sourced and prepared by owner Caroline and I award her a ‘Goose Star’. The weekend just had to include a jaunt on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway – I loved the smell of steam and we soaked up the …

Rest and Relax in Yorkshire

Loved a family weekend in North Yorkshire, June was busting all over with sunshine and brilliant greenery, and the bluest of sparkling seas. It was a delight to be staying once again at Raithwaite Estate, a short walk from Sandsend, this time in their small boutique hotel, The Keep. All the rooms, facing the wooded valley, have huge bathrooms with an enormous bath, walk-in shower and the wonderful therapeutic Aromatherapy Associates products. So relaxing! Lucky I had my iPod in my bag for soothing music! We took the chauffeured buggy to the main hotel for dinner, and on the table were these lovely birthday flowers from my family!! Mother’s Day at Raithwaite Hall

The recent Mother’s Day weekend was a brilliant excuse to have a family gathering at a gorgeous hotel. Raithwaite Hall near Whitby ticked all our boxes, plus many, many more. It’s not really what you expect of quaint little Sandsend, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, a glamorous 45 bedroom hotel, a host of luxury self-catering cottages, a swimming pool and spa, but hidden up a wooded drive off the Whitby Road, Raithwaite Hall, a 19th century, former ship-owners mansion provided us this and more. Raithwaite Hall offers five star service right from the moment you arrive, from the friendly welcome at reception to the warm yet not imposing manner in which you’re shown to your room. Our room in the main hall overlooked the gardens, was large and spacious with huge comfortable beds and a modern classy bathroom complete with Aromatherapy Associates products. It was a very quiet and cosy environment to spend time in. Our package included dinner in the main restaurant. Pre-dinner cocktails were served in the cosy bar. …
